Adam Chang

Born 1960, Shanghai. Lives and works in Sydney.

His large canvases with iconic imagery have firmly placed him in the sights of significant collectors in Australia and Asia, particularly in his native China where he is regarded as one of the most powerful painters in the international art world.

Adam Chang, winner of the 2011 Archibald Prize People's Choice Award, is one of Australia's leading contemporary artists. His large canvases with iconic imagery have firmly placed him in the sights of significant collectors in Australia and Asia, particularly in his native China where he is regarded as one of the most powerful painters in the international art world.

Chang lived through Mao's Cultural Revolution in China and acutely understands the influence the man had, not only on China, but the world. It is for this reason Chang has depicted the Communist leader numerous times, including his limited edition prints Mao and Mao with Terracotta Army Marching exclusive to Art Equity. The reference to Mao in contemporary art is by no stretch a new phenomenon, with the most famous depictions being by Andy Warhol.

Chang is a five-time Archibald Prize finalist, two-time finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize and his work has been included in both major institutional and corporate collections internationally and in Australia.
